If there is a "Boil Water Advisory" in effect, what does that mean?

When a "Boil Water Advisory" is in effect, it means you must boil your water because the water's current condition does not meet normal standards. Specifically, you need to bring your tap water to a rolling boil, boil for one minute, then cool before using. You can also use bottled water certified for sale by the New York State Dept. of Health. Boiled or bottled water should be used for drinking, making ice, washing dishes, brushing teeth, and preparing food until the advisory is lifted. It is acceptable to shower when a "boil water advisory" is in effect, but you should not ingest the water.
